The Prime Minister was forced to rely on the votes of opposition MPs to get his legacy project through with 383 MPs backing it, while 59 Conservatives voted against.
The revolt was bolstered with the help of top Tory ministers and MPs, including Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch, five ministers, a Tory deputy chairman and senior names including Liz Truss, Suella Braverman and Robert Jenrick.
And 106 Tory MPs did not vote at all, meaning just over half of Mr Sunak's troops backed his plan after he gave them a free vote.
