Titanic 'trailblazer' Bernard dies aged 79

The Manchester-born star died in the early hours of yesterday, his agent Lou Coulson said.

He got his break in Boys From The Blackstuff as jobless Yosser Hughes in recession-hit 80s Liverpool.

The actor, who was married to Marianna, had one child and lived in Suffolk, was Captain Edward Smith in the Oscar-winning 1997 epic romance Titanic.

In The Lord Of The Rings trilogy directed by Sir Peter Jackson, he portrayed Theoden, King of Rohan. Bernard joined the Lord Of The Rings cast for the second film, 2002's The Two Towers.

He returned to the franchise for 2003's The Return Of The King.

In the 2015 adaptation of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall he played the Duke of Norfolk.

Alan Bleasdale, who wrote the 1982 drama Boys From The Blackstuff, said Hill's death was "a great loss and also a great surprise".
