The British-born extremist, 57, must serve a minimum of 28 years and is likely to die behind bars.
Choudary, who inspired the killers behind the 2013 murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby and two deadly attacks on London Bridge, had boasted of being "untouchable".
But he was last week convicted of masterminding banned extremist group al-Muhajiroun (ALM).
Undercover police in the US and Canada had launched an unprecedented operation with UK anti-terror officers to nail the father of five and disciple Khalid Hussein, 29.
The conviction made them the first people to be prosecuted under UK laws for their association with the extremist group.
