RORY MCILROY has been told his two short-putt misses at the US Open will 'haunt him for life'.

McIlroy suffered heartbreak on Sunday, after seizing a two-shot lead with five holes remaining at Pinehurst, as fans believed his 10-year major drought would end.

But the 35-year-old missed two short putts as part of a late three-bogey run that opened the door for Bryson DeChambeau, who produced a moment of magic at 18 to win.

The crucial two misses came from 2ft 6in and 3ft 9in respectively and Sir Nick Faldo (above) said: "That's going to haunt Rory for the rest of his life, those two misses."

McIlroy sped off the premises once DeChambeau won, but performance coach Jon Adler believes the showing can propel him to another major title, at next month's Open.
