Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the city's river to prove its readiness ahead of the Olympics, but French President Emmanuel Macron turned his nose up at the idea.
The water had failed hygiene tests ahead of the Games, despite £lbillion investment.
It was found to contain faecal matter sometimes 10 times higher than authorised levels.
