RAPISTS and burglars will avoid being sent immediately to jail as we run out of prison places.
Judges have been told to delay sentencing hearings from next week.
Lord Edis, the senior presiding judge for England and Wales, has suggested cases involving criminals who are currently on bail be postponed over concerns there will be no space for them in the prison estate.
According to reports, ministers are also considering releasing convicts early to ease the pressure.
Labour said it was a "damning indictment" of the Government.
