STEPHEN Lawrence's mum Doreen knows only too well about how hopes and dreams can be shattered.
And as the Labour peer prepared to mark her son's racist murder 31 years ago today, she told how she wanted to help other youngsters realise their ambitions as part of his lasting legacy.
Baroness Lawrence joined forces with Keir Starmer, who vowed to give all children the chance to reach their full potential. The pair chatted to primary school pupils ahead of Stephen Lawrence Day, which this year highlights the power of learning.
She said last night it was a "privilege to join the Labour leader speaking with some fantastic young people, one of who wants to be an architect like Stephen".
Baroness Lawrence added: "Thirty-one years on from his death, I remain as committed as ever to championing his legacy by encouraging the next generation to develop key skills and overcome barriers to getting on in life."
Mr Starmer vowed to break down the barriers which stop youngsters achieving. He said: As we remember Stephen, we must continue the work to honour his legacy through expanding opportunities for young people and equipping them with the skills they need to tackle issues of the future.
