IN an extraordinary press conference in London, Dr Shoo Lee set about demolishing the case against Lucy Letby by presenting the findings of his 14-strong panel of medical experts.
Neonatal specialist Dr Lee, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, forensically unpicked some of the evidence in front of the assembled media and laid bare the problems with medical care the panel found at the Countess of Chester hospital where the babies died.
Damningly, he said the hospital was so bad it would have been shut down if it was in Canada.
The list of problems at the hospital included poor skills in resuscitation and inserting breathing tubes, a lack of understanding of some basic procedures, plus misdiagnoses and unsafe delays in treating acutely ill babies.
He said evidence was also found of inadequate numbers of appropriately trained staff, work overload, a lack of teamwork and medics looking after ill babies "probably beyond their expected ability of designated level of care".
He claimed: "There were serious problems related to medical care of patients at this "I hope our findings bring comfort and closure to the families of the affected infants hospital. In summary, ladies and gentlemen, we did not find any murders. In all cases, death or injury were due to natural causes or just bad medical care.
"In our opinion, the medical opinion, the medical evidence does not support murder in any of these babies - just natural causes and bad medical care.
