McCoist can't believe ref wasn't sent for second look at pivotal Scotland pen call

GUTTED Ally McCoist admits he’s baffled why VAR didn’t ask ref Facundo Tello to take another look at the penalty claim that could have made history for Scotland.

The former strike star didn’t think Steve Clarke’s boys should have been awarded a spot-kick on first viewing – but was left convinced Stuart Armstrong was decked by Willi Orban after seeing the replay.

And McCoist – the last man to score a winner in a major finals for Scotland – insists the man from Argentina should have been called to the monitor for another look.

The former Rangers star said: “It’s amazing, I am going to be brutally honest with you. When I first saw it, I didn’t think it was a penalty.

“Then I watch it again and he definitely hits his calf. Orban catches Armstrong’s calf with his knee.

“I can understand, perhaps, the referee not thinking it was a penalty right at the start like I did. It must go to VAR.

“It’s funny because the first person I met when doing a post-mortem after the game was Pat Nevin. I was talking away to Pat and he still didn’t think it was a penalty.

“We all have different opinions. I don’t think there is any doubt, when I look at it. Why VAR has not had a look at it is baffling.”
