Experts say high temperatures make air pollution worse

SCOTLAND is set to continue baking in a September heatwave amid a UN warning that extreme heat is worsening air pollution in cities.

The country is expected to imminently confirm official heatwave conditions - which requires the mercury to soar above 25C somewhere in Scotland for at least three days in a row.

That happened on Sunday and Monday and seemed likely yesterday as many Scots hit beaches and parks to enjoy the September scorcher, set to run into the weekend.

The Met Office altered its long-term forecast to suggest there will be a further warm spell towards the end of the month.

Neil Armstrong, from the Met Office, said: "While the highest temperatures are expected in the south, heatwave conditions are likely across much of England and Wales especially, with parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland also likely to see some unseasonably high temperatures.
