FOOTBALL legend Frank McAvennie says he is "lucky to be alive" after a sleeping driver smashed into his car in a horror crash.
The ex-Celtic and Scotland star was rushed to hospital after a car careered into his VW Touareg in the Borders.
Frank's motor was written off and he says he only survived thanks to his "quick reflexes" as he tried to steer away from the collision.
McAvennie, 64, was left in agony and requiring hospital treatment.
He said: "It was a bad car crash.. it was terrifying actually. I was horrified.
"That could have been the end of me. I really feel quite lucky to be alive.
"It could have been so much worse and actually doesn't bear thinking about.
"When you see the damage done in the pictures, it gives you an idea of how bad it could have been.
"I was left a bit battered and bruised but was very lucky to be able to walk away."
The crash happened as Macca was driving to play a round of golf with pal John Hartson at West Linton in the Borders on August 4.
