A FORMER gamekeeper who trapped and killed magpies in his garden has been banned from keeping animals for five years.
The SSPCA welcomed the sentencing of Alexander Hamilton, who pleaded guilty to confining the birds in illegal cages in his garden in Penicuik, Midlothian, in 2022.
A trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard the 64-year-old deprived them of food, water and shelter, which caused them deep distress.
