CARTGATE erupted at Carnoustie yesterday after Padraig Harrington called on golf bosses to take pity on the Senior Open crocks.
Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer claims that up to 10 of this week's field are struggling with major fitness issues, himself included.
But pleas for the walking wounded to be allowed to use golf carts fell on deaf ears when the committee responsible for rule changes refused to budge.
Apart from Langer, fellow Major champions John Daly and Vijay Singh and 2016 Senior Open champion at the Angus links, Paul Broadhurst are the worst affected.
Broadhurst, in fact, is forced to use a walking stick due to the effects of arthritis.
But that didn't stop the 58-year-old Englishman from posting a remarkable opening 69 with a birdie-birdie finish to sit on three-under par.
Broadhurst's problem centres on his right ankle where the bones are rubbing together.
