>> Tartan Army travelling to Cyprus held up as airports come to standstill

SCOTLAND'S airports were plunged into chaos yesterday after an escaped terror suspect sparked a nationwide manhunt.

Travellers were forced to queue for hours at airport security gates as police issued a red alert over former soldier Daniel Abed Khalife, who escaped from a prison kitchen by clinging on to a delivery van.

Glasgow Airport came to a standstill as security gates were shut down and Border Force officials carried out enhanced checks at the busy travel hub.

Thousands of travellers faced delays, including Scotland fans travelling to Cyprus for the vital Euro qualifier tomorrow.

Khalife, 21, went missing, in his cook's uniform, shortly before 8am yesterday from HMP Wandsworth in London, where he was awaiting trial for planting a fake bomb and gathering information on other soldiers for use by terror groups.

His escape sparked one of the UK's biggest manhunts amid fears he was trying to flee the country-leading to disruption at airports around the country.

At Glasgow Airport the security queue was snaking out of the main airport building at one point. No other passengers were allowed to enter due to it being "at capacity".

A public announcement told frustrated passengers the delays were being caused by a "national incident".

Passengers told how they faced lengthy waits to get through the usual security and were then forced to queue again for a second bag check.

John Robertson, who was going to London, said: "When I got to security about 12.45pm, it seemed a lot busier than usual. I then noticed the X-ray belts were all at a standstill.

"That's when I heard from a staff member police were looking for someone and security had been closed temporarily.
