TV Nicky tells of his relief as abuse accused is named by inquiry

BROADCASTER Nicky Campbell has spoken of his relief after it was ruled the man accused of abusing boys at his old school can now be publicly identified.

Previously known as "Edgar" to protect his identity, a judge has now ruled that Iain Wares can be named after dozens of former pupils at Nicky's school, Edinburgh Academy, and nearby Fettes College accused him of physical and sexual abuse in the 60s and 70s.

Wares, 83, was named by Lady Smith, chair of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, after an application by media organisations, including the Daily Record, to allow publication.

Last night, BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky, 61, said: "It's a very emotional day for the survivors. They felt like they were keeping a secret and were sick of being made to keep secrets.

"All credit to those men who stood up in front of Lady Smith and argued for him to be able to be named.
