THE Royal Mint abandoned a copper mountain of unwanted 1p and 2ps in giant warehouses sparking fears for the future of the coins.
Around 260million surplus coppers are being stored "indefinitely" across Britain.
UK Finance declined to comment on its excess coin data but a spokesman hinted it might be time to assess the future of the smaller coins.
