1 The longest fingers in history belonged to 8ft 11in (2.72m) gigantism sufferer Robert Wadlow, from Alton, Illinois. His hands measured 12.75in when he died aged 22 in 1940.

2 There are no muscles in your fingers. They are connected to muscles in the palm and mid forearm, which pull on tendons to move the finger bones like the strings of a puppet.

3 We wear wedding rings on the wourth digit of our left hands because it contains the vena amoris, or vein of love, which was once thought to connect directly to the heart.

4 They may be bigger boozers, but men with longer ring fingers also make more money than their short-fingered counterparts, according to University of Cambridge research.

5 Elite athletes are also more likely to have longer ring fingers, studies have shown. This is because their higher testosterone levels help them metabolise oxygen more efficiently.
