DANNY DRINKWATER has claimed he hated going to work at Chelsea and sought solace in drinking and sex as his life spiralled out of control.
The former England midfielder’s world started to fall apart following his £35m transfer from Leicester in 2017. “It was garbage,” he admitted.
After an injury-dogged first season, Drinkwater has revealed he was told he was surplus to requirements by Maurizio Sarri and given only one hour to find a new club before the transfer window shut.
It started the decline which saw him arrested for drink-driving – and now retire at the age of 33 after fighting mental health problems.
“I’d be going into training knowing I wasn’t playing and sometimes even training,” said the Manchester-born star.
“Earning the wage doesn’t mean a thing. I’m not earning it how I want to earn it. For me, it’s like a kick in the b*******.
