FOREIGN Secretary Lord Cameron faced tense talks in Turkey today after furious denunciations by its leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Israel's conflict in Gaza.
The visit, at the end of a Middle East tour by Britain's former prime minister, came as Mr Erdogan backed South Africa's attempts to bring a charge of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The court in The Hague was issuing a preliminary decision today.
Lord Cameron met Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan in Istanbul this morning after the pair spoke by phone earlier in the month, when Mr Fidan demanded Britain lessen tensions in the region following UK-US air strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Houthis say they are attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea in solidarity with the Palestinians against Israel, which Mr Erdogan says is a "terror state".
