FIRST Lady Jill Biden will represent the United States at the King’s Coronation next month, the White House has announced.
President Joe Biden telephoned the King personally to let him know he would not attend. Mr Biden also expressed his desire to meet the King when in the UK. A White House statement said: “President Joseph R Biden Jr spoke today with King Charles III, underscoring the strength of the relationship between our countries and the friendship between our peoples.
“The President congratulated the King on his upcoming Coronation and informed him that First Lady Jill Biden looks forward to attending on behalf of the United States. The President also conveyed his desire to meet with the King in the United Kingdom at a future date.”
It is not unusual for US presidents to skip the coronation of a British monarch. Former president Dwight Eisenhower sent a special delegation to represent him at the late Queen’s 1953 Coronation.
