Elected seven times, the 67-year-old has been the Tory MP for Maidenhead since 1997 and was Britain’s second female Prime Minister, although her premiership was blighted by Tory wars over Brexit.
Her decision is the latest by a string of Conservative MPs to say they will quit at the next election, widely expected in the autumn.
She stressed that since stepping down as prime minister she had “championed causes close to my heart” including launching a global commission on modern slavery and human trafficking. “These causes have been taking an increasing amount of my time,” she told her local newspaper.
