DEMONSTRATORS clashed with police in Shanghai and a BBC journalist was “beaten and kicked” after being detained as protests in China over Covid restrictions flared for a third day and spread to several cities.
Protesters in Shanghai were forcibly removed by police using pepper spray. The BBC said that police assaulted and detained one of its journalists covering the protests there before releasing him after several hours.
It said in a statement released today that it was “extremely concerned” about the treatment of reporter Ed Lawrence. “He was held for several hours before being released. During his arrest, he was beaten and kicked by the police. This happened while he was working as an accredited journalist.”
