ORK: Luigi Mangione was charged in New York on first-degree murder charges for the fatal shooting of UnitedHealth Group executive Brian Thompson. Prosecutors said the shocking case amounted to an act of terrorism.

Prosecutors elevated the case to first-degree murder, a charge reserved for "the most abhorrent act," like killing a police officer, serial killing or terrorism, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said on Tuesday. If convicted, Mangione faces life in prison without parole.

Mangione, 26, waited outside a downtown Manhattan hotel before shooting Thompson on October 4 with a 9-millimeter, privately-obtained ghost gun with a high-capacity magazine, Bragg said.

He then fled Manhattan, triggering a five-day manhunt that ended with his arrest in Pennsylvania.

"This was a frightening, targeted murder meant to shock and intimidate," Bragg said, noting that he threatened local residents and tourists in a bustling city.

Bragg announced the indictment in a Pennsylvania court. Hearings for Mangione were set, initially determining his extradition to New York. Mangione previously said he would not fight it.

MOSCOW: Russia said, on Wednesday, it had detained an Uzbek man who had confessed to planting and detonating a bomb which killed a top general, Igor Kirillov, in Moscow on the instructions of Ukraine's SBU security service.
