The parliamentary committee on subordinate legislation in the Lok Sabha has granted an extension to the ministry till January 9 to frame the rules, while the corresponding panel in the Rajya Sabha has given it till March 30.
Passed by Parliament in December 2019, the implementation of law has been delayed by four years. It seeks to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. It was passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, and was notified on December 12 the same year. But the rules for the law were never framed.
