Over the past few months, the 19-year-old's visits have reduced as the open gym equipment in the green space lies damaged and abandoned.
Shivangi said that the open gym was regularly used by locals when it began, today only children play with the damaged equipment.
"No one is bothered to repair it despite repeated complaints," she said. The nuts and bolts of some of the equipment is damaged and parts of other equipment are simply cast aside."
The problem is not limited to the Mayur Vihar park, which is maintained by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). In 2016, the three erstwhile municipal corporations first started installing open gyms at city parks. Several people, who were unable to afford home equipment, make time or get gym memberships, visited the parks for their daily physical routines.
Over the last five years, such gyms have only grown in number. Today, 1,775 parks under MCD and 342 parks under the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) are equipped with these open gyms. However, many of these units are in desperate need of maintenance with damaged exercise machines not being replaced for several months, residents say. This issue is more evident in the east and north Delhi regions.
