ACCORDING to medical advice, Lorcan Murphy might be able to return to playing basketball in April of next year after coming so close to being paralysed.
Eighteen months out of action was the diagnosis that the Ireland international received when he was told he had shattered three bones in two vertebrae in the most innocuous of circumstances on October 17 last year.
Doctors contacted him four months later to say that rehab facilities were available to him. Murphy was a month out of the full body brace he needed to aid his recovery at that stage.
You can imagine their surprise when he told them he was already back playing basketball.
"They were just amazed," laughed Murphy. "They said, 'hold off on the physio so!".
On that fateful October night, the Templeogue player was getting up off the mats after doing his core exercises when the mats slipped out from under him.
His feet went up in the air and he rolled backwards. Murphy felt a back cracking sensation but he got up and drove home.
