A strike rate of exactly one every two games in the top flight for the Red Devils began 25 years ago when he signed from Aston Villa.

His debut season at Old Trafford saw him spearhead the charge to the then unique English achievement of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League Treble.

He scored 18 league goals that season and shared the Golden Boot with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink of Leeds.

Under Erik ten Hag, the current United squad have started on the road back to something like their fans were used to in Yorke’s day but which disappeared a decade ago when Yorke’s old boss, Alex Ferguson, retired and the blue half of Manchester assumed control of English football.

Yorke is convinced that while there are many suitable candidates to do for United at No.9 what Erling Haaland has done in the past year for City, one player stands head and shoulders above the field.
