VLADIMIR Putin is pinning hopes on a Donald Trump election victory next year to turn the tide of the war, say Western officials.
The Russian president believes that if Mr Trump returns to the White House he could cut US backing for Ukraine and weaken resolve against the invasion.
Putin's troops have been hit by a string of military losses, culminating in a slow withdrawal from the country.
