A MUCH-LOVED aid worker from south Manchester died after a 'gunfight' broke out when 'armed bandits' tried to storm a castle in Nigeria, an inquest heard.
Faye Mooney, 29 and her boyfriend, fellow aid worker Mathew Oguchi, were gunned down whilst on an Easter break at a 'luxury holiday resort.
They were 'caught in gunfire' when a gang of around 10 men said to be armed with AK-47s entered the grounds of the resort in the northern state of Kaduna, Manchester Coroners Court was told. The hearing was told that the 'most likely motive was kidnap and ransom!
Fighting back tears as he paid tribute to his daughter, who had an extensive career in international development, Faye's father Paul Mooney described her as a compassionate, fun-loving, hard-working, brave and 'fiercely intelligent young woman! "Faye was not just a hard and dedicated worker, she was selfless and humble and possessed a rare capacity to combine her very serious work with a great sense of fun and joy," he said.
