The woman, aged in her 30s, was struck by a Vauxhall Insignia on the East Lancashire Road at around 12.50am yesterday. She was a pedestrian, police said.
A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He remained in custody to be quizzed by detectives.
Police said the car had been travelling towards Liverpool along the A580 when it collided with the woman.
