NEW AI cameras that can detect whether drivers are on their mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt have been rolled out on roads across Greater Manchester.
The 'Heads Up' technology captures footage of passing vehicles, which is then run through artificial intelligence (AI) to detect whether drivers are breaking the law. It is then examined by a human to confirm that the software is correct, and that an offence has been committed.
The software, which is being trialled by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) can be mounted to a vehicle or to a trailer. The cameras went into operation across the region on Tuesday.
Cameras were recently installed along a section of Mancunian Way are part of the five-week trial. Transport bosses wouldn't share where others are across the region, merely saying 'several' would be deployed.
