Jordan Welsby was 'catapulted into the air' after he was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa driven by Faisal Yasin, from Rochdale. A court heard that 25-year-old Yasin told members of the public he didn't see' Mr Welsby after driving straight into him without braking.
Mr Welsby, 26, was rushed to hospital with 'catastrophic' head injuries following the crash on Boxing Day 2020. He died six days later, on New Year's Eve. On the same day, Yasin was pulled over by police for further motoring offences.
Liverpool Crown Court heard Mr Welsby had been out drinking with teammates to mark the festive period. Kate Morley, prosecuting, described how at around 11pm, he was crossing Prescot Road in St Helens, near to the Eccleston Arms pub, when he was stuck by Yasin's vehicle.
The Blackbrook ARLFC half back, who represented Great Britain and Lancashire at amateur level, was rushed to hospital before being transferred to an intensive care unit.
