Lib Dem leader defends 'very bad joke' of candidate

Lisa Smart, who is hoping to become MP for Hazel Grove, has apologised for the comments.

It comes after a video showed the Stockport councillor out campaigning when she said to a voter from Liverpool: "So you've just been nicking stuff while you're here."

During a visit to the constituency yesterday, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed told the M.E.N. that his candidate made a mistake. He said: "It didn't sound like the Lisa I know who is normally really charming. I think she was telling a very bad joke. It was really a bad joke.

"She's apologised for it. People make mistakes. If they apologise and realise they've made a mistake, I think people should accept that."
