'I think there is a lot of mistrust in the community now...'

AS DARK clouds gathered above Rochdale, a thirst for accountability gathered pace.

Reporters and camera crews spent yesterday camped outside the town's police station.

The night before, hundreds of people had gathered at the same location in protest. It followed 'truly shocking' footage emerging of a police officer kicking and stamping on a man's head around 20 miles away, at Manchester Airport.

The man was being detained as officers responded to reports of an assault in terminal two on Tuesday evening. The individuals who were the target of police attention in the video have been identified as being from Rochdale, but not all have yet been named.

On the street outside Rochdale police station today, there was one story which dominated the conversation of passersby.

An officer implicated had already been suspended by Greater Manchester Police yesterday morning.

But as anger about the video spread from Rochdale to Westminster and beyond, calls for 'justice' grew louder. "I think there is a lot of mistrust in the community now," said Sofia Kauser, 37.

"We feel targeted and we shouldn't feel like that. We should feel safe." Sofia was in attendance at last night's protest, where she says there 'was a mixture of emotions' and a hunger to 'stand against injustice'. She says the 'carnage' shown in the viral video 'angered a lot of people'.
