Benfica have an obligation to buy Fernandez for EUR6 million rising to EUR9m if he plays 50 per cent of their games between now and the end of the season. Benfica also have an option to buy the Spaniard if the obligation threshold is not triggered while United have inserted a buy-back option and a sell-on clause.
The 20-year-old had spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Spanish side Grenada. He was recalled to Old Trafford earlier in the window after a break clause in the loan deal was activated.
United have now confirmed that the defender has gone straight back out on loan, joining Portuguese side Benfica until the end of the season.
