Breaking all barriers to resolving the impasse and in an unconventional move showing what pro-people leaders look like, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set an example on Saturday and made a surprise visit at the Swasthya Bhavan agitation site to talk to protesting junior doctors and assured them of government action.
Following Banerjee's visit, the agitating doctors requested a meeting with her through an e-mail which was promptly accepted by the Chief Minister and they were given time to hold talks at Banerjee's Kalighat residence at 6:00 pm.
However, despite the CM's repeated appeal with folded hands the doctors refused to hold the meeting after a wait for about 3 hours at her residence unless live-streaming was allowed or they were permitted to videograph the entire meeting.
Earlier in the day, issuing an appeal to stirring doctors to withdraw their strike, for the sake of the people, as their 'Didi' and "elder sister", Banerjee said she supports their demands for justice.
"I am not here as the Chief Minister but as your Didi, as your elder sister. I urge you to return to work. I support your movement for justice," she told the agitating doctors on Saturday, reiterating her demands for justice for the RG Kar victim and capital punishment for the perpetrators.
