Justice Sanjiv Khanna appointed next CJI

NEW DELHI: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI), set to assume office on November 11, 2024. The announcement came through Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who confirmed the appointment on social media platform X.

"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon'ble President, after consultation with Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024," Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal posted on X.

Justice Khanna will succeed the current CJI, Justice D Y Chandrachud, who will complete his tenure on November 10, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.

The incoming Chief Justice will serve a relatively brief tenure of just over six months, with his term scheduled to conclude on May 13, 2025.
