Despite efforts to reduce debt, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to face a significant increase in its debt servicing costs over the next five years, adding further strain to its financial position.
According to government estimates, NHAI’s debt servicing will surge from ₹33,000 crore in FY24 to over ₹62,000 crore by FY28, primarily due to servicing of loans to construct an additional 34,800-km stretch of national highways under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, which was approved in 2017. NHAI’s total debt as of 31 March was at a staggering ₹3.43 trillion, marginally lower than the ₹3.48 trillion in March 2022.
