True diplomats, experts say, are career officers who often find themselves having to tidy up the messes made by their politically appointed bosses in embassies.

There were probably a few of these in both the SA government and countries friendly to us, who would have flinched at the public remarks made by Pretoria's ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, along the lines of American President Donald Trump leading a reactionary, "supremacist" movement.
