Contributions outshone by legal wrangles
The Daily Guardian|December 21, 2024
From being a champion of farmers' rights to becoming Tihar Jail's oldest inmate, Om Prakash Chautala's life reflects a blend of significant achievements and tumultuous controversies.

While his tenure advanced Haryana's rural and agricultural landscape, his legal troubles cast a shadow over his contributions. Born on January 1, 1935 in Chautala village of Sirsa district, the son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, Chautala carved his own path in Haryana's politics, becoming a five-time Chief Minister and a key figure in Jat-centric politics.

However, the Chautala family stands politically divided at the moment. Om Prakash Chautala first became the Chief Minister of Haryana on December 2, 1989, holding the position for 171 days. His second stint came briefly in July 1990, lasting just five days, and another in March 1991.
