It is said that man is a social animal. This acknowledges the fact that we are inherently social beings who thrive in the company of others and depend on social interactions for survival, well-being, and development. From infancy, we rely on caregivers for physical and emotional support.
As we grow, we continue to seek companionship, affection, and approval from others. Social interactions shape our self-identity and behaviour. Our relationships and the understanding that individuals contribute to the well-being of the group, and in turn, the group supports the individual, form the bedrock of communities.
The sustenance we receive from others in terms of material help, services, and emotional and spiritual aid, fosters in us a desire to give something in return, to be of value to the society we live in. Doing this gives meaning to our life, uplifts others, and enhances our self-esteem.
