But this time, the difference was that the shooter was a girl who shot herself dead after the act.
A 15-year-old shooter, a student at the school, Natalie Rupnow (also known as Samantha), opened fire in a Wisconsin school classroom on Monday, leaving a fellow student and a teacher dead and wounding six others before killing herself with a handgun.
The shooting took place in a mixed-grade study hall at the Abundant Life Christian School, which has 420 students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.
There have been 322 school shootings in the United States this year, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database website. This is the second-highest total of any year since 1966, exceeded only by last year's total of 349 such shootings.
Monday's shooting was rare in that it was carried out by a girl. Girls account for about 3% of all U.S. mass shootings, studies show.
Only last month, President Biden announced new laws to control gun laws. Nothing happened, and nothing was expected—not because it was ordered by Biden, but because the country he presides over is the USA.
Now that President-elect Donald Trump is set to be sworn in on January 20, 2025, many concerned parents are asking if the new year will be any different. The gun scenario in the U.S. is scary. Owning a gun is considered a right in the U.S., not a status symbol as in India. Ironically, when children use these guns, they are treated as adult criminals. Ethan Crumbley, the 15-year-old who opened fire at Oxford High School on November 30, 2021, with a semi-automatic handgun his father had bought him as a Christmas gift, killing four students and injuring six, took the number of juveniles in jail without parole in the U.S. to 74.
This data represents only 19 of 50 states in the U.S. where children under 18 can be arrested.
