The BJP has announced candidates for seven of the nine seats in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly by-elections, setting up a high-stakes contest against the Samajwadi Party (SP).
Among the most high-profile names is Anuj Yadav, a relative of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who will contest from Karhal, a seat that has long been under the influence of the Yadav family. Anuj Yadav is the brother-in-law of SP MP Dharmendra Yadav and, through this relation, also of Akhilesh Yadav. His candidacy is seen as a bold move by the BJP to challenge the political legacy of the Yadav family.
