'April Fool's Walk', a wise initiative for better footpaths

To raise awareness among Mumbaikars on how they are being deprived of better footpaths, several communitybased organisations held ‘April Fool’s Walk’ on Sunday. The initiative was aptly named based on the idea of how the BMC has been “fooling” pedestrians by spending thousands of crores of rupees on improving footpaths, but the ground reality remains the same.

Social welfare groups like Fridays For Future, iVolunteer and Walking Project organised the event at the King’s Circle area in Matunga. The objective was to turn the spotlight on the critical issues like lack of better infrastructure for pedestrians and inaccessibility of footpaths for the disabled. Notably, the Bombay High Court has asked the BMC to resolve the issue of incorrectly placed bollards on footpaths as they are a hindrance for wheelchair-bound persons.
