Former Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla was on Tuesday evening appointed as the new Governor of Manipur, which has been witnessing ethnic violence since May 2023. Bhalla will replace Lakashman Prasad Acharya, who assumed the office on July 31 this year. The appointee is considered to be one of the most trusted men of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and also enjoys the confidence of PM Modi. He is not new to North East either and belongs to the 1984 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. Hailing from Jalandhar, he served as Home Secretary for around five years till August 2024.
