Justice Shekhar Yadav's controversial remarks at a VHP event spark outrage, with calls for impeachment
NEELU VYAS

The recent remarks by Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event have sparked widespread outrage, marking a grim moment for India's judiciary. Justice Yadav allegedly referred to Muslims as “kathmullahs,” a derogatory term, and claimed that India should be governed according to the majority’s wishes. He went further, pledging support for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a subject fraught with controversy.

Such statements by a sitting judge not only violate judicial propriety but also betray the oath taken to uphold the Constitution. Several legal forums and civil society groups have called for immediate action, urging Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to initiate an in-house inquiry and suspend Justice Yadav from his judicial duties. Supreme Court Bar Association president Kapil Sibal has sought support from parliamentarians to impeach the judge, while National Conference MP Ruhullah Mehdi has already garnered signatures from seven MPs to initiate an impeachment motion.
