Reportedly, the attackers also flung a rock at the moving vehicle. Awhad was recently at the centre of a controversy over his remarks against the former Rajya Sabha MP, Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati.
News of the attack sparked protests near Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where Awhad lives. A large number of his supporters staged an impromptu 'rasta roko on the Eastern Express Highway, causing a massive traffic jam. Videos show that police did not immediately take stringent ac tion against the protesters.
