While the state government holds the Navy squarely responsible for the decision to install the Chhatrapati Shivaji statue near Sindhudurg Fort, it cannot duck responsibility for ignoring the statute on statues.
The collapse of the statue on Monday stirred the state machinery to force the PWD to lodge an FIR against the sculptor and the structural consultant. A political blame game ensued, with the ruling Mahayuti saying that the decision to erect the statue was that of the Navy, which is yet to clear the misgivings.
