In 2019, just as she had settled in the top 100, Boulter sustained a severe back injury and did not play for seven months. Her ranking plummeted and it has taken her four years to finally make it to the US Open main draw through her ranking. And last night she made known her presence in New York.
Parry is a talented 20-year old with nice variety, angles and the only single-hander inside the top 100. But for all of her welcome flair, her game can be underpowered at this level. From the beginning, Boulter took advantage of her greater pace of shot, forcing herself inside the baseline and playing with controlled, potent aggression off both wings.
After trading difficult holds early on, Boulter snatched the first break at 3-3 by clinching an excellent return game that included three forehand winners. But it was how she went about opening the court and creating the opportunities.
One was secured after a 10-stroke rally, with Boulter patiently waiting for a short ball to attack and take control on the court. Then, on break point, she broke serve with an excellent 18-stroke rally, which she dictated from the beginning but never overpressed, finishing with a cross-court forehand winner.
