The pied tamarin has one of the narrowest ranges of any primate and is found only around the borders of the city. In recent decades it has been squeezed out of much of its home by the sprawl of Manaus, which is the most densely populated metropolis in the Brazilian rainforest with more than 2.2 million residents.
